Venice, Italy

Carina Hansen

Venice is such an incredible city and everything about it was wonderful! When we arrived in Venice our first stop was our hotel, but we had to get there. We arrived by train so we started walking from the train station to the hotel, but the streets of Venice were very confusing as there weren’t many roads at all. It was mostly canals. Us, not realizing this, had to take a bunch of turns and had to make our way through the streets to even arrive at our hotel. Thankfully, we did end up making it, but it took us much longer than it would have with a ferry.

That first day we just relaxed and went for dinner at a delicious restaurant. As one of our appetizers, we had cantaloupe wrapped in prosciutto. The balance of the meat and the sweet melon was extraordinary. Something I realized in all of Italy is that their melons are super sweet and super delicious. They taste so much better than the ones in the United States. The next day we started off our morning with a gondola ride! I’ve always wanted to go on one and we finally decided to do it! It took us through the canals of Venice and it was absolutely amazing. We did this relatively early in the morning and it was super peaceful and beautiful. It might be a cliché, but one of my dreams has always been to go on one and what better place than the city that is famous for it! Afterwards, we just walked around Venice and explored a bunch of different areas and some side streets. Venice has such an incredible set up with all of the canals and roads. The architecture of Venice was also mesmerizing as there is such a difference between the modern architecture of the U.S. and the renaissance architecture in not only Italy, but also the entirety of Europe.

That afternoon we ended up visiting the Piazza San Marco. It was so beautiful, however, we had a very interesting run in with the Italians. We weren’t the only tourists there and several of them, us included, were sitting on the steps of the Piazza San Marco. We were eating some delicious Italian gelato when we, along with others, got yelled at for sitting on the steps. We didn't realize it wasn’t allowed at the time, so we were really confused. The main issue was there were no other benches around to sit on, so that was why we ended up sitting on the steps of the Piazza San Marco in the first place. The following day, we left and not wanting to repeat our mistake from the first day we took the ferry back to the train station which made our lives much easier. Venice is such a beautiful and truly magical city and the ability to go there was incredible; my only tip if you ever go is don’t sit on the steps of the Piazza San Marco!
